Birthday Bash!

Last minute(ish) long weekend away in Ely at the Poets House Hotel. Very pleasant hotel with its butler service USP (which, perversely, we didn’t use). Excellent restaurant, which we sampled both evenings, and which looked to be popular with both hotel guests and locals alike. Just enough in Ely to keep you busy for two full days.

Visited the family home of Oliver Cromwell (only vaguely aware he was from these parts, depressingly ignorant of this period of English history) and the Ely museum; and of course, went inside the wonderful Ely Cathedral, which now charges circa £14 to visit the cathedral and to venture up the West Tower. Has to be said, though, that it is a superb cathedral and, as we now surely know, if there is a tower around, it has to  be climbed!. Weather broke nicely to allow for some excellent photo opportunities from the summit. Still, a little bit pricey if they want to bring in the families. Lower the cost, more visitors maybe?

A great break for those of us who have reached a certain age!
